Top tips on managing stress when waiting for exam results

by Hannah Parton, Content Team contributor

Summertime means one thing for a lot of students; exams have finished and now there’s the dreaded wait for those results. This can be an incredibly worrying and stressful time. I remember those days very well.

So, keeping this in mind, I thought I’d put together some top tips on how you can manage these stresses and worries.

  1. Talk to those around you.

Don’t feel like you have to hold it all in. Speak to someone you trust about how you’re feeling and what’s worrying you. Sometimes just getting it out in the open can make you feel so much better. Nearly everyone has sat exams before. So, whether it’s a friend or a family member, chances are they’ve sat an exam. Therefore, they’ll know exactly how you’re feeling and they’ll know how best to comfort you. Don’t feel like you have to go through the worries on your own.

  1. Have something nice planned.

In times like these, I often feel regardless of the outcome, it’s good to have something fun planned for afterwards. When results day arrives, whether you’ve got the grade you wanted or things didn’t go 100% to plan, it’s important to have something planned to celebrate. Sitting an exam or finishing an essay is an achievement in itself and it deserves to be celebrated, regardless of the result at the end.

  1. Think of what you can control.

It can be really easy to reflect and worry about what could have gone differently in an exam or in an essay. Maybe your mind went blank on a question or you remember a really good quote you wanted to add to an essay, once you’ve sent it off for marking. We all have those times we wish things had gone differently, but those moments have been and gone. Worrying doesn’t change anything in the past, it takes away the joy from the present. Summer is here in full swing and only you can control how much you enjoy it and you deserve to enjoy it!

A little extra note:

In the past, when I would get stressed over a grade and start to panic, I remember a quote that one of my university lecturers once said to me. “ You have to remember Hannah, that this is one assignment, of one module, of one course, of one chapter in your life”. Sometimes a reminder of perspective can help in those moments of panic. Exams and grades are small chapters of your life. Yes, they’re important but they are not the most important things in life. As long as you tried your best, no one can ask for more.

I hope these tips can help calm those nerves and worries. I hope you all have a lovely summer and best of luck for results day! You’ve got this!

Speak soon,

Hannah
